Hemp seeds are thought of as one of the world’s healthiest super foods. They are filled with a wide variety of vitamins and minerals that are extremely important to our bodies. On top of the fact that they are full of these nutrients, they are also one of the best ways for vegetarians to get their protein intake. That’s right these amazing seeds are not just high in protein but they are a vegan food too. While there is no doubt about how healthy these seeds are for you, many people assume that they are illegal to buy.
There is a whole lot of confusion about hemp seeds and whether or not they are legal in the US. First, let me answer this question right away, YES, hemp seeds are 100% legal in the United Kingdom. The confusion comes from the fact that cannabis is illegal. Though hemp and cannabis come from the same plant, they are a completely different subspecies. While cannabis will get you high, hemp does not contain the chemical THC and there for is not technically a drug.
Though it is true that hemp is not a drug, you are still not allowed to grow it in the UK – if you would want to grow it yourself, you would need to obtain a license. Interestingly enough, a growing number of farmers is growing hemp on their farm land. The Guardian has written a really interesting piece about farmers growing hemp a couple of years ago.
So, just remember, it is okay for you to purchase and consume this super food but you can never grow it on your own.
